The Nude Gioconda
Leonardo da Vinci Nude Gioconda ( 1495 - 1496 ) Size: 89 x 65.5 cm collections
The Nude Gioconda, also known as Monna Vanna, is a captivating and enigmatic artwork closely linked to Leonardo da Vinci and his studio. This masterpiece, drawn with charcoal and chalk on paper, is believed to date back to the early 16th century. Its striking resemblance to Leonardo’s iconic Mona Lisa has fueled debates among art historians and researchers for centuries.
The drawing depicts a nude woman in a seated, slightly angled pose, bearing a serene expression reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. Scholars suggest it may have been a preparatory study for a never-completed painting or an artistic exploration of the ideal female form, a concept central to Renaissance art.
Now housed in the Louvre Museum, The Nude Gioconda remains a subject of fascination, reflecting the mystery and mastery of Leonardo’s artistic legacy.

Maurizio Seracini is the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture, and Archaeology (CISA3) at the
University of California San Diego's California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). He is a pioneer
in the use of multispectral imaging and other diagnostic tools as well as analytical technologies as applied to works of art and structures.
He has studied more than 2,500 works of art and historic buildings. Seracini joined Calit2 in 2006, more than thirty years after graduating
from UCSD with a B.A. in bioengineering in 1973. Seracini returned to Italy for graduate school and received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering from the University of Padua, where he went on to study medicine. From 1975-77, he participated in the Leonardo Project to locate the long-lost fresco, "The Battle of Anghiari" (a project sponsored by the Armand Hammer Foundation, Kress Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution). In 1977, Seracini established Editech, a Florence-based company that was the first to provide art and architectural diagnostic services. In 1979 he co-founded the Interdisciplinary Center for Ultrasonic Diagnostics in Medicine, also in Florence.
Lic. Jur. Carlo Poma played a significant role in bringing attention to The Nude Gioconda. As an art editor and jurist, Poma was instrumental in the documentation and dissemination of art connected to the Renaissance period. His expertise and efforts helped establish historical and scholarly discourse around lesser-known works attributed to Leonardo and his circle, contributing to the artwork's lasting legacy.
Sadly passed away 2015. James L. Kirschman was born on January 24, 1945. He graduated from the University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Sacramento, California in 1972 and received a Juris Doctor Degree. He is currently a licensed to practice law in the State of California. In 1980 he gave up the practice of law and since that time he has been a real estate developer in California and involved in a variety of business projects as a business and legal consultant.

In 1975, I met in Florence a professor, Carlo Pedretti, my former professor of art history, and today a world-renowned scholar of Leonardo da Vinci. Well, he asked me if I could find some technological wayto unfold a five-centuries-old mystery related to a lost masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, the "Battle of Anghiari," which is supposed to be located in the Hall of the 500 in Palazzo Vecchio, in Florence. Well, in the mid-'70s, there were not great opportunities for a bioengineer like me, especially in Italy, and so I decided, with some researchers from the United States and the University of Florence, to start probing the murals decorated by Vasari on the long walls of the Hall of the 500 searching for the lost Leonardo.
Maurizio Seracini has been featured in many different media channels. Below is just a few of the more popular and well known shows and articles over recent past.
The da Vinci Detective, first released in 2006, was produced by the BBC and featured on the Smithsonian channel, it launched Seracini into the international spotlight.
Dr Maurizio Seracini is a pioneering scientist who has made his name by ingeniously adapting the latest medical and military technology to reveal the secrets of great art works. This film follows Seracini on his controversial journey to solve two specific Leonardo mysteries – the location of the lost mural, The Battle of Anghiari, and a remarkable new story he has uncovered about Leonardo’s great, unfinished, alter piece The Adoration of the Magi.
